As another reviewer mentioned, this is more of a pamphlet of common-sense advice. Not really minimalist advice, just basic info on cutting down the clutter and tension of the holidays. Pretty much the same advice you'd find in the holiday issues of Real Simple or Good Housekeeping.

A Minimalist Family Christmas edition by Faith Janes Politics Social Sciences eBooks Reviews

It wasn't horrible but honestly everything in it was just common sense. Nothing in it made me think, "oh that's a great idea".
This book basically offered ideas of things people already do. I was a bit confused when she's talking about decorating and using things from nature (pine cones, berries etc.)to be 'green' and then talks about cooking the Christmas day meal in aluminum pans with lids and then throwing them away. What? Does she have any idea what they will do to our environment? Doesn't sound minimalist to me.

I have some suggestions for making Christmas less hectic. These are things I have done this year and I plan on enjoying the season with my friends and family

Start shopping early, a little at a time - easier on the wallet. When you have an idea for somebody get it so you don't forget. And shop from the comfort of your own home in your pj's by shopping . Great prices and they have just about anything you want. No crowds, no pepper spray, so trampling.

Wrap the gift as they come in so you don't have piles to wrap Christmas Eve.

Decorate a little at a time. I started at Thanksgiving putting out a few things and am continuing until next weekend when we will get the tree and be done.

Baking also can be done a little at a time. A few different kinds each Saturday/Sunday up to Christmas and you'll end up with quite a few.

There, I've written my book on making Christmas easier. This year I plan on sitting and relaxing with my husband with a glass of wine enjoying the glow from the lights of the Christmas tree.
This is a great guide for those of us with families on our journey to become minimalists. This is just what I needed to survive the holidays!
This is a great book for families or just anyone wanting to simplify their holidays from gift giving, to decorating to everything in between this is a great book.
Do not recommend. Do all of the suggestions. Is a 1 in my rating. Others might like but I did not.
The writing seems a little disjointed to me. I realize this isn't a novel and need not be gripping and exciting but the voice seemed a bit cold. A lot of the ideas were good, it just wasn't a terribly pleasant or warm read.
I suppose it took an economy like this to make me really appreciate this book--but I love how it's helped change my perspective. As I get older, I really appreciate the call to simplicity, which I need. My favorite chapter in this book was the chapter on "NOPE," which gives you permission to and the confidence to say "no" (a lost art, for sure!). This little book has become one of two books that have helped shape my perspective this Christmas. (The other is a devotional 30 Scripture Readings for Christmas (Year Long Bible Reading Series). Between the two books, I've got my heart and mind in a great place this season.
As another reviewer mentioned, this is more of a pamphlet of common-sense advice. Not really minimalist advice, just basic info on cutting down the clutter and tension of the holidays. Pretty much the same advice you'd find in the holiday issues of Real Simple or Good Housekeeping.
