In the far future Gods walk among us selling their religions. The Buddha has lost all the weight, got hair plugs, and generally feels much better about his commercial image. Thor has completely abandoned his pantheon and instead you can most often find him at the beach smoking very strong marijuana (it's medicinal) or surfing. Oh, and Jesus likes to entertain at cocktail parties by doing coin tricks with the help of his stigmata.
Poor old Spencer Cully has accidentally wound up in this future gone to the gods and has readily gotten himself into quite a fix, what with all the agnostic leaning ideas and a Philosophy degree cluttering up his mind and really, all he wants to do now is get back to his own time and stick his head under a cat. The cat will be explained in chapter six. There is also some guff in here about social equality and being allowed to choose who you spend your life with. You know current affairs.
Also, everyone in this novel, unless otherwise described, speaks in a British accent. The reason for this is that, in my opinion, everything is funnier if done in British accents. It is you, dear reader, who will finally decide what kind of accents the characters speak in, but I am just warning you ahead of time the slang used here in will be easier to take if taken in Cockney. Enthralling, imaginative, unique, this story walks a perfect line between absurd and brilliant and I adored every word of it. It's a rare thing when a writer can so envelope one in story that the reader is able to laugh aloud at the antics of the Gods as if they were no more distant or fictional than the odd character sitting just one barstool over in the neighborhood pub. Delightfully cerebral and artistic, I look forward to reading this again and seeing just how much I missed the first time around, for I am sure that within the many twists of de Vellas' words, there is even more enjoyment to be had the second time around.Product details

I normally am not much of a reader but once I started this book I couldn't stop. The characters were vivid and enjoyable. The little details thrown in here and there were my favorite. Some were incredibly humorous and others just showed how great of care was taken in creating the world inside this story. I actually laughed out loud at some points. I recommended it to many of my friends. If you are at all curious to check it out then you definitely should.
A compelling read that probes issues such as free will, just government, and lifetime companionship, all wrapped up in an entertaining and humorous narrative. The story takes place in an imaginative setting 1,000 years in the future, during a time when one can see others' auras hovering over their heads. The society is paradoxically enlightened yet repressed in this thought-provoking novel. I thoroughly enjoyed the book and highly recommend it!
We Have You Right Where You Want Us reads like a classic story, yet isn't quite like anything else. The scenes with Thor and Jesus are priceless, and that's just the tip of the iceberg. And then, while you're just reading along because you found yourself caught up a clever story... damn, some spot-on social commentary statement is made. It's good, and highly recommended.
This book is fantastic! The way the story flows from one topic to the next is natural and encourages the reader to read 'just one more page'. The wit and satire are so well blended, that I felt that Capricho was inside my head at times, which is scary on so many levels. I have to recommend this book to anyone who is a fan of sharp satirical humor that is also though provoking. 'What is freewill?' The characters were well developed, and nary a loose thread by the end. In short YOU MUST READ THIS!
With keen humor and impeccable wit, de Vellas captures the imagination from the first paragraph, and takes it on a journey that challenges the notions of life, liberty, the pursuit of happiness, and the needs of one's own heart. It has been a while since I have found myself making time to get to the end of a chapter, or laughing out loud (in public). Dare I say it, de Vellas has a touch of the Christopher Moore in him.
Few things in life are as satisfying as reading a good story written well and if you enjoy greatness then I highly suggest that you read this book... I'm just saying, who doesn't enjoy greatness?
I highly recommend this book! This is a truly thought provoking and fun read! I have read hundreds of books for pleasure. If you don't capture me at least by the first chapter, I will move on to the next book. de Vellas had me hooked from page 1! Our lead character in "We Have You Right Where You Want Us", Spencer Cully, starts off volunteering, albeit with reservations, to be the first human suspended animation to be reanimated one month later. One short month of uninterrupted sleep and receiving a cool two thousand pounds is not a bad deal, right? Oh and a promise from the super sexy curvy lab assistant, Veronica, to go out on a date with when he awakens! But, as it usually does, things go wrong. Spencer awakens a thousand years in the future in a seemingly utopian society where the gods interact with humans and a governing body of twelve mind-linked individuals officiate the spiritual development and enlightenment of all citizens. Without giving any more of the story away, I would truly recommend you buy this book and take the journey with Spencer into the future. You too will be cheering him on in his quest to challenge authority and make his own life choices.
